The family entertained Napa Valley for decades with their quarrels, lawsuits, affairs, extravagant bashes, etc. To those who think that some new regulatory agency is needed, the author does not agree. (A few years ago I asked: How do we handle the prospect of the Evil Transhuman? Answer: Plan on becoming the first one!) Many philosophers have long recognized that most people (the vulgar) live closer to the animal level than a relative handful of humans who have greater capacity for cognition and achievement. Rather, this reads as quite the love story, infused as much by warmth and devotion as by professional interests. This is a beautiful intro into fascinating geology! It's written as a set of stories, making it appealing to the young audience, however it describes many complex geological notions and provides an insider view into this science and people in it, into research methods and history. Well written, but the author's obnoxious obsession and cloying self-pity throughout the book over learning the identity of her biological mother is annoying. Kristjansson deftly and elegantly weaves Norse mythology and history with fantasy in a novel that offers not only a good dose of bloody Viking feuding, but intrigue and romance..
